CASE PROBLEM IV: Liquid-side mass transfer coefficient (kLa) expectations in function of liquid viscosity, liquid flow rate and flow regime for cases involving physical absorption

Problem statement: The user needs to understand how the liquid-side mass transfer coefficient (kLa) reacts to a liquid viscosity increase and a liquid flow rate increase. Furthermore, how does the transition between the low interaction regime (LIR) and high interaction regime (HIR) affects kLa.

1) Determine a general trend for kLa in function of high liquid viscosity (Specifications: Liquid viscosity:  = 2-30 cP; Mass flow rate: L = 5 kg/m2s).

2) Determine a general trend for kLa in function of liquid mass flow rate (Specifications: Oxygen absorption in water from atmospheric air).

3) What main observations can be advanced for the evaluation of k La in the low interaction and high interaction flow regime?
